Speaker Series - Angie Babbs
“The Art of Weaving”
Angelia “Angie” Babbs is legally blind and hearing impaired. She relies on her sense of touch to learn about her environment. She has resided at Laurel Ridge Senior Living Residence, for the past 11 years.
“The art of weaving is a timeless craft that not only allows me to create a beautiful work of art, but it also has many psychological and therapeutic benefits. Weaving classes provide a safe social setting for me to express my creativity and learn new skills. It engages the mind while promoting individuality and choice, which is very beneficial to me. It also allows me to make my own creative choices. After learning a new skill and working on it persistently, the joy I feel when the piece of art is completed is a great form of validation and reinforces a sense of purpose in my life.”

Speaker Series: "The Definition of Insanity' A Documentary Film with Director/Producer Gabriel London
The Definition of Insanity is an exploration of the Miami-Dade Community Mental Health Project (CMHP) — a novel approach to solving the mental health crisis that could be a model for America. Shocked by how people with mental illness were treated in Miami-Dade’s jails, Judge Steve Leifman works with a team of dedicated public servants, as well as former adversaries in the criminal justice system, to help people with mental illness navigate from lives of tragedy to possibility. The film reveals a humane criminal justice approach to mental illness that is orchestrated from the court outwards into the community through its novel Jail Diversion Program (JDP).
From court dates to group therapy, the film follows Miami’s community-based experiment to solving the mental health crisis, where incarceration becomes the last resort and everyone from the police to prosecutors works together to support the notion that “recovery is possible.”

Writing Group
Meeting once a month on the first Monday of the month, (except not in January) our BAC Writing Group will be a haven of non-judgmental creativity and spontaneity. Based on the work of Natalie Goldberg, as expressed in her popular book WRITING DOWN THE BONES, the group will be facilitated by Jim Petosa, (Professor Emeritus, Boston University College of Fine Arts) who has been leading a Writing Group at the Unitarian/Universalist United First Parish Church in Quincy, Massachusetts for more than ten years.
Here’s what one review of Goldberg’s book has to say about her method.
“The secret of creativity, Natalie Goldberg makes clear, is to subtract rules for writing, not add them. It’s a process of ‘uneducation’ rather than education. Proof that she knows what she’s talking about is abundant in her own sentences. They flow with speed and grace and accuracy and simplicity. It looks easy to a reader, but writers know it is the hardest writing of all.”
Such is the spirit of our BAC Writing Group! We will work from prompts and we will share our words by speaking them to each other at the culmination of ⁶each session. (Participants can always opt out of public sharing.). At the end of a season of work, we will create an evening of public reading (voluntary) that highlights the work of each participant
Participants can feel free to come to ALL sessions, or to come to as many as they are able, or to come just once to try it out!
FREE to BAC Members in good standing. $5 Per session for non-members.
