Workshops 2009

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Most workshops require no previous experience and are limited to ten students. Teens 14 and older may register as adults.

An * indicates that this workshop is a series which implies workshops can be taken together or individually.

All workshops are held at the Becket Arts Center unless otherwise indicated.


Cost of Workshops unless otherwise noted:
Half-day workshops (10am - 1pm ) or (1:15pm - 4:15pm ) $30; non-members $35.
Full-day workshops (10am - 4pm ) $40; non-members $45.
Series and material fees are found with workshop descriptions.

Tuition assistance is available primarily for full-time Hilltown residents.


Refunds/Cancellations:
Students who cancel registration two weeks in advance of the first class will receive a full refund.  Students who cancel 7 to 13 days before the first class will receive a 50% tuition credit.  There are no refunds or credits for cancellations made 6 days or less before a course begins.  If you are unable to attend, you may contact the office for a letter enabling you to claim your tuition as a tax-deductible gift.

Confirmation of Registration: Please send a self addressed stamped envelope to the Becket Arts Center when you are registering and paying by mail.

Workshops can be cancelled when minimum registration is not reached.

Please register no later than 5 days before the worshop/event.

Painting




Summer Fun and Inspiration "En Plein Air"

Bring supplies you need and a snack and soft drink.

On-going creative art group on mutually agreed days. Examples of outing locations: Otis Reservoir; Fall River Chasm, Otis; Rice Preserve, Peru; and other inspiring spots in the Berkshires.

*Fun with Watercolors

Material Fee: $3 for each workshop
For beginners and those who wish to improve their skills.

This workshop will provide instruction, practice and individual attention in basic watercolor technique.  Each workshop will include demonstration of a particular technique such as wet-in wet washes, color theory, paint mixing and transparent layering.  Subject matter includes still life and landscape. Come experience the joy of watercolor!
 A materials list will be provided upon registration.

Paula Gottlieb has been teaching workshops, classes, and retreats for almost forty years. She Holds a BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and Rome and an MFA from Indiana University, Bloomington. Her paintings can be seen at R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton and at www.paulagottlieb.com

Drawing


Ink and Watercolor Rapid Figure Drawing
Saturday, July 10 and August  7 • 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Half day workshop fee $25; Non-members $30
Limit: 10
Materials needed: Watercolor pad 5 x 7;  Sharpie permanent black marker;  an 8 pan Prang Watercolor set or bring your supplies, large water containers, mixing palettes, pointed brushes.  Material Fee paid on-site if you need materials ($14).  Please be ready to pose fully dressed for 5 minutes.

Participants will make live figure sketches with a fine point marker and color washes.  All levels. Beginners most welcome.

Life Drawing Without Instruction

Work in any medium. An un-clothed model and easels are provided. Short poses are extended to longer poses according to the desire of the participants.

Many great artworks spring from the depths of the subconscious. This class focuses on ways of accessing and expressing subconscious material. Incorporating design principles and drawing techniques, students will learn to trust their intuition and open themselves to inspiration.

Wednesday Nelena Sorokin - WorkshopWednesday Nelena Sorokin is a painter and teacher with more than 30 years experience.  With an MFA from James Madison University, she is one of the artists who initiated and completed the mural “The History of Women in Northampton, MA from 1680-1980".  She has exhibited widely and has work in numerous private collections throughout the United States.

Life Drawing- The Human Form in Space

Drawing the human form is a compelling way of learning how to translate the three-dimensional world into two dimensions.  Students learn how to perceive relationships within forms and of the form in space.

Sculpture



Life Modeling in Clay

Saturdays, July 31 and  August  7, 14 • 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Life Modeling In Clay - Michel Paul RichardFashions come and go, but the undraped human figure is forever.  Watch your creation come alive with the help of a live model.  In this class we will strive to become anatomically correct.  Initial short poses will lead to consensus on a longer pose which the model can sustain. 

Michel Paul Richard has degrees from New York University and the University of Chicago. His sculpture (in various media) is in several private collections and he has taught sculpture classes in Florida and Massachusetts.  Currently he serves as the Art Teacher of the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires.

Mixed Media


Quilting

Mondays, July 12, 19, 26 • 1:15 pm - 4:15 pm

Fee for each class: $15; Non-members: $18
Series of 3: $40;  Non-members: $50

Participants will make individual pieces and will be involved in a group quilt to support the Becket Arts Center that will be exhibited in our Members Exhibit.
Beginners are welcome. Machine is optional.
All workshops will cover: quilting tools, cutting, hand or machine piecing, batting choices, binding and hand or machine quilting.

Ellen DeGrave was the founder of Notion to Quilt store, in Shelburne Falls, MA where she taught quilting classes and sold fabric and notions.  She has been quilting for the last 30 years.

Appliqué a Wall Hanging or Table Runner

Perfect for beginner or intermediate student.

Barbara Barron - AppliqueCreate a beautiful heirloom for your home utilizing adaptations of  popular designs. Simple ironed fused appliqué techniques will be demonstrated. Cotton fabric, threads, and designs will be provided. Sewing machines welcome, but not necessary.

Barbara Barron studied fiber and ecclesiastical embroidery at Oxford University and the Royal School of Needlework in London, England. Certified teacher of Embroiderers Guild of America. Operated Barbara Barron Design, a fiber arts gallery in Huntington, NY for over 25 years. She has created sanctuary fiber art for over 40 synagogues throughout the United States.

Paint, Light, Transparency

Workshop combines a studio visit with a demonstration of the art of glass painting and glass on glass collage.  Following the demonstration participants will have the opportunity to create their own light and color-filled transparent single or multi-layered paintings.

Nina Evans - Paint, Light, Transparency WorkshopNina Evans is a watercolorist whose fascination with transparency and light led her to the exploration of a virtually unknown medium: glass painted, collaged on glass, and then backlit by either artificial or window light.  She will have a one-person exhibit at the BAC July 22-August 2.  Meet her at her Reception: Saturday, July 24th.

Product Design



Build a Kaleidoscope CANCELLED
Monday, July 19 and Thursday, August 12 • 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Material Fee: $8 for front surface mirrors

Please go to a craft store and purchase kaleidoscope media” such as
small colorful translucent/transparent items for inclusion.   Students may use other small transparent /translucent media of their choice.

Fee: $10;  Non-members $12

A PowerPoint presentation will show the history and design of Kaleidoscopes that have been built and successfully used to provide many hours of enjoyment. Detailed handouts will describe different ways to build a Kaleidoscope. All the units we build will be generic, and it will be up to the students to embellish their project after the class is over.

David Goldstein is a retired Mechanical Engineer with experience in optical product design and development.  He has designed and built many kaleidoscopes and is an experienced woodworker.

Play Reading Group

Thursdays, July 8 - August 26 • 9:30 am - 11:30apm

No fee for Members; Non-Members $7 per session
No materials fee (scripts purchased by group members)

Plays are meant to be shared – to be spoken and to be heard.  That’s exactly what we’ll do!  Popular plays will come to life as participants read the lines of the characters.  Anyone who enjoys seeing or reading plays is welcome to join this informal group.  Scripts will be purchased by participants, then brought to meetings for a ‘read-through.’  Participants will take turns facilitating discussions.  Plays to be determined at first meeting and ordering instructions provided.  No experience necessary. 

Coordinators:
Ann Krawet adores having theater in her life.  She has appeared in Community Theater productions in leading roles and was a featured vocalist in cabaret shows.  While a High School teacher she directed and produced full stage Broadway musicals.  She studied at Westchester Conservatory of Music and privately.

Dorothy Napp Schindel is a long time theater director, scenic designer and arts educator.  She taught acting at NYU, was Director of Education at Berkshire Theater Festival and Director of DramaMUSE Associates, a ‘museum theater’ company in New York.  She holds two degrees in theater and studied with legendary Bill Hickey at HB Studio.

Body, Mind, Spiritual Wellness

Dynatonics with Sean Gallagher We will explore ways to find and release trigger points and muscle spasms using foam rollers and balls.  You will have ways to undo the aches and pains of daily life no matter what you do.  Gardeners, writers, artists, dancers all can benefit from this work.

Sean Gallagher was a modern dancer for over ten years and has been a physical therapist working with performing artists for over twenty years. He is a Feldenkrais practitioner and has been teaching Authentic Pilates for the past sixteen years in New York City and for the past ten years at Jacob’s Pillow. *LiquidBody Yoga

LiquidBody Yoga is a creative fluid system process that recognizes that your body is mostly water that can be sculpted with simple sounds, breaths and movements. It works from the inside out to improve circulation and build liquid strength.   Through guided improvisational movement sequences that follow the natural curves of your bones, muscles and fascia, tension is released while honing a deep body-mind connection.

Caryn Heilman  has taught somatic approaches to dance and movement for the last ten years in such places as Jacobs Pillow,  Smith College and the Bejing Dance Academy. She holds an MFA from the University of California at Irvine and has studied  somatic movement with Emilie Conrad, founder of Continuum Movement for over 15 years as well as Astanga Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi and other somatic modalities.  She has ten years of performing arts experience as a professional dancer in the Paul Taylor Dance Company.

Moving the Chakras

In this series we will explore the qualities of the 7 chakras on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. Each class will focus on one of the chakras through the use of meditation, movement improvisation, yoga and the expressive arts. The final class will integrate all of the chakras, creating a greater sense of balance within the body, mind and spirit.

Arin Willey has been a movement educator for over 10 yrs and has worked with a variety of populations. Arin holds a B.A in both Dance and Human Development from Prescott College, AZ and a M.A. in Dance/Movement Therapy from Antioch Graduate School in NH.

Tai chi is a practice involving movement and meditation. All 24 movements of Yang style Martial Art Tai Chi will be taught in this bi-week eight week workshop.  The warm-up will include the healing movements and concentration from Chi Gong. 

Della Schleunes, earned a Masters of Arts degree in Dance from Cal State Long Beach and studied martial arts from Rick Lee Armington in Los Angeles, CA. She taught Tai Chi as part of the dance and physical education programs at Marlborough School in Los Angeles and at Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass. She works one day a week as a regular sub at Berkshire West teaching aqua aerobics and pilates, and occasionally yoga.
